The place, in three passes.
Santa Rosa Beach is an unincorporated community in South Walton County, on the Florida Panhandle, stretching along the western end of Scenic Highway 30A. The road runs roughly twenty-six miles from Dune Allen Beach east to Inlet Beach, passing through Seaside, WaterColor, Grayton Beach, Blue Mountain Beach, and Rosemary Beach. The Gulf-facing dunes are backed by Point Washington State Forest, fifteen thousand acres of slash pine and titi swamp. Highway 30A itself was designated a Florida Scenic Highway in 2009. The sand is pure quartz, ground from Appalachian granite.
The fifteen coastal dune lakes along 30A are a globally rare landform, occurring in only Florida, Oregon, Madagascar, New Zealand, and Australia. The lakes hold fresh water from rainfall and groundwater seepage; when storm tides breach the dune, they briefly meet the Gulf in a saltwater pulse called an outfall. Western Lake, the largest, sits inside Grayton Beach State Park. Eastern Lake and Camp Creek Lake anchor the eastern stretch. The dunes between each lake and the sea are protected and re-planted with sea oats.
Public beach access along 30A is generous, with hundreds of regional access points across South Walton County and posted parking at each. The peak season runs from late March through August, with July the busiest month and a smaller fall window in October. Grayton Beach State Park charges a per-vehicle entry fee and offers paddleboard rental on Western Lake. Bicycles are the preferred way to move through the 30A communities; the paved Timpoochee Trail follows the road end to end and connects every village along the route.
