“A Lake Michigan state park in Berrien County, south of Sawyer and about ninety minutes from Chicago. The shoreline runs three miles, backed by a wall of dunes the wind keeps moving. Tower Hill rises about 260 feet above the water. Hang gliders launch from the crest on west-wind days; in the morning the beach belongs to the gulls.

Warren Dunes State Park covers 1,952 acres along the southeast shore of Lake Michigan in Berrien County, between Sawyer and Bridgman. The park holds three miles of beachfront and a chain of open dunes rising as high as 260 feet at Tower Hill. The land was assembled by Edward K. Warren, a Three Oaks merchant who began buying the parcels in 1879 to keep them from being mined for sand. Michigan accepted the gift in 1930, and the park opened the following year.

Warren Dunes sits on the lake's prevailing west-wind shore, which is the geological reason the dunes are there at all. Sand from the lakebed and the beach is carried inland and dropped on the dune chain, building it slowly over centuries. The Nature Conservancy describes this stretch as part of the longest freshwater dune system in the world, running from Indiana north through Sleeping Bear. Hang gliders launched from Tower Hill ride the same lift the dune itself was built on.

The park's busiest months are June through August, when the parking lot at the main beach fills by mid-morning on weekends. The lake reaches its warmest in early August, around 72°F at the south end. October brings the strongest surf and the clearest sunsets, with the sun setting over open water from spring through autumn. Gates stay open year-round; winter access is by ski or snowshoe across the dunes when the lot has been plowed and the wind allows.

Tower Hill, the highest point in the park, rises about 260 feet above Lake Michigan. The rest of the dune chain ranges from 150 to 240 feet, with open sand at the crest of the largest dunes.
