“Five berths along the downtown waterfront, with Mount Roberts dropping straight to the dock and the Gastineau Channel running blue-grey past the float planes. Ships tie up at the AJ, the Cruise Ship Terminal, Franklin Dock, and the two anchor points further out. On a peak summer day Juneau receives about twenty thousand passengers off as many as five vessels. The Mount Roberts Tramway climbs eighteen hundred feet from the dock in six minutes. South Franklin Street fills, then empties by six in the evening, and the channel goes quiet again. from the studio

The city has no road connection to the rest of the state; everything arrives by water or air. The cruise ship harbor lies along Marine Way and South Franklin Street, with five docking positions: the AJ Dock, the Cruise Ship Terminal, the Franklin Dock, and two anchorages in the channel. Cruise season runs from late April through mid-October, with peak volume in July. On a busy day the city hosts up to five large vessels and around twenty thousand passengers. The Mount Roberts Tramway leaves from a station built into the AJ Dock and climbs about 1,800 vertical feet to a viewing deck and the Timberline restaurant. Walking access from the dock to South Franklin Street's shops and Tracy's King Crab Shack is two minutes. Voters approved a five-ship daily limit in 2024 that begins applying in the 2026 season.

Gastineau Channel runs about fifteen miles between Juneau and Douglas Island, draining south to Stephens Passage. The channel is deep, cold, and tidal; tide swings can exceed twenty feet. Float planes work the water just north of the cruise berths, running passengers out to Mendenhall Glacier and Taku Lodge. Humpback whales feed in the channel through summer, and small boats out of Auke Bay run whale-watch routes daily. The downtown waterfront sits about thirteen miles from the face of Mendenhall Glacier.
