“The cathedral that grew up around something older. Set into the south transept, the Camara Santa is pre-Romanesque, built under Alfonso II in the ninth century, and holds the Cross of the Angels and the Victory Cross. The Gothic shell came later. Oviedo is the start of the Camino Primitivo, the oldest of the pilgrim roads.

The Cathedral of San Salvador stands at the centre of Oviedo, the historic capital of Asturias on Spain's green north coast. The building visitors see today is largely Gothic, raised between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, with a single tower over the west front. The earlier Camara Santa sits in the south transept and predates the rest of the complex by some five hundred years. Oviedo is also the start of the Camino Primitivo, the original route to Santiago de Compostela, walked since the ninth century.

The Camara Santa was raised under King Alfonso II around 802 as a royal chapel and reliquary. Its style belongs to Asturian pre-Romanesque, a regional manner of building that took hold in the small mountain kingdom while most of the peninsula was under the Umayyad Caliphate. Six carved apostle columns flank the entrance to the inner chamber. UNESCO inscribed the chapel and its companion buildings, Santa Maria del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo, as a World Heritage site in 1985.

The relics inside, the Cross of the Angels from 808 and the Victory Cross from 908, are processed on the Feast of San Salvador. The cathedral keeps daily mass and afternoon visiting hours; the Camara Santa carries a separate ticket. Most Camino walkers start from the cathedral square, the Plaza de Alfonso II el Casto, and head west toward Santiago, about 321 kilometres on foot.

A regional manner of building used in the Kingdom of Asturias from the eighth to tenth centuries, before Romanesque spread across Europe. It uses small ashlar stone, barrel vaults, and triple-arched windows. Oviedo holds its best surviving examples.
